Scientists in School Air & Flight Visit

Our Grade 6 classes have been very fortunate to receive support from the parents and the parent council through enrichment opportunities by inviting scientists into the classroom to engage students in hands-on activities. This month Ms. Wang, an instructor for Scientists in School guided students through a half day workshop focussing on Air and Flight. Students investigated various properties of air and principles of flight through experimentation. Ms. Wang graciously agreed to a brief interview carried out by a few students which will be posted soon. Also, student group representatives will include a summary and reflection of their learning over the next few days in this blog. Enjoy :o)

  1. Last week Scientists in School came into my school for half the day. Ms. Wang was really good at teaching Air and Flight! We had so much fun with the many experiments! I really enjoyed the experiment where we got to fly the paper airplanes we created, in different directions just by changing the elevators and the paper clip. What was your favourite part of the Scientists in School and why? Sophie

  2. I also really enjoyed when Ms. Wang came because we learned lots of cool things involving are flight unit. I think everyone had a great time when she came in and shared experiments and interesting facts. My favourite part of the Scientists in School was also flying the paper planes because we got to compare how different the plane would move if just one piece of paper was adjusted. I think this is going to be one of the best science units yet! What do you think is going to be interesting about this unit? Julie

  3. Like before I would really like to thank Ms.Wang for teaching me all about scientific methods like(Newton's third law). Which all of this stuff was really interesting and I really appreciate having her in.Stephen

  4. Inviting guests who specialize in specific fields (e.g., scientists) provides learners with the opportunity to be exposed to learning from a different perspective. Scientists in School provides those opportunities in a very meaningful, hands-on workshop for students. It is great that as students you are applying your knowledge and making connections to new learning such as the use of the scientific method.

Stephen, you mentioned Newton's third law as a example of what Ms. Wang introduced in the workshop. What is Newton's third law and it's relevance within the properties of air or principles of flight?

  5. I strontly feel that I learned a lot about air and flight. I hope I can learn more on properties of air and flight because I never knew things like; air and water are sticky and share similar properties. Thanks for setting the SIS, Mrs. Tavares. Troy

  6. I really enjoyed having a scientist come in and teach the 6th graders about air and flight. It really taught me a lot and cleared up a lot of things I wondered about flight. I'm very excited to proceed forward with our air and flight unit. Rachel

  7. When I first heard that the Scientists in School were coming in to teach us about air and flight, I was very excited. When Ms. Wang came, I couldn't wait to get started on our projects. There were things I didn't know about, like air and water have similar characteristics and that air has mass, it is sticky and its importance in the aerodymanic design of airplanes. After the program I have a better understanding of air and flight. Thank you Ms. Want. Alejandra

  8. Having Ms Wang with us was awesome! She was demonstrating things about the properties of air. In the half day that she was here, I learned a lot of things about flight and air. I never knew that air and water was similar especially when showing pressure. Stephanie
